The opposition AIADMK's chief ministerial candidate Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) has accused DMK president MK Stalin of creating "unprecedented debt in history" and failing to implement welfare schemes for the people since taking power in 2021. Speaking at a campaign rally in Chengalpattu, EPS questioned the need for such high debt, amounting to ₹5 lakh crore, and claimed that the DMK regime has not delivered on its promises. EPS, who is leading the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) charge in the 2026 assembly elections, alleged that the DMK government is corrupt and has been involved in scams such as the TASMAC liquor scam worth ₹1,000 crore. He was accompanied by BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan. EPS also criticized Stalin for not meeting the people since taking power and for issuing challenges to him instead of engaging with the public. He claimed that the DMK regime has failed to increase the number of working days under MGNREGA, despite promising to do so, and has instead launched a "defamatory campaign" against the new rural employment law. The AIADMK leader vowed to increase the number of working days under the new law to 150 if his party comes to power. He also promised to provide laptops to students, a scheme that was halted by the DMK government, and accused Stalin of lying about the scheme. Stalin had earlier challenged the AIADMK to match the achievements of the DMK government, which he claimed has brought progress to the state. EPS responded by saying that the DMK government's achievements are mere "lies" and that the people have resolved to topple the DMK regime in 2026 and establish the AIADMK in its place.
