Nine members of a family, including six children, were killed in a freak late-night accident in the Shivajinagar area of Dindori tehsil in Maharashtra's Nashik district on Friday.
The vehicle, a multi-utility vehicle (MUV), veered off the road and fell into a roadside well in the dark, trapping all occupants beneath the submerged vehicle.
Efforts to rescue the victims lasted nearly two hours, with local swimmers and cranes deployed to retrieve the vehicle and bodies.
The victims were travelling in the MUV after attending a get-together organised by a private coaching institute in Dindori town.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his condolences to the victims and said the government will provide financial assistance of ₹5 lakh to the heirs.
A case has been registered and an investigation launched into the incident, with Maharashtra Minister Girish Mahajan describing it as a 'very big mistake by the officials'.
