Assam's governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya has appointed Himanta Biswa Sarma as the next chief minister of the state, with a swearing-in ceremony scheduled for May 12.

The BJP leader was unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP-led NDA's legislature party and met the governor at Lok Bhawan to stake claim to form the next government.

The ceremony is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah, and several other dignitaries.

The BJP won 82 of the 126 seats in the recent election, securing a clear majority on its own, while its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF), won 10 seats each.
