India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held talks with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi to address shipping safety and energy security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz.
The conversation comes amid escalating tensions in the region, with several commercial vessels damaged in recent attacks.
The Indian government confirmed that around 9,000 Indian nationals are currently in Iran, including students, seafarers, professionals, business people, and pilgrims.
Several of these individuals, particularly students, have already left Iran and returned to India, while others have been shifted to safer locations within the country.
The Indian Embassy is assisting nationals who wish to travel to Azerbaijan and Armenia to return home, providing help with visas and facilitating land border crossings.
