India Appoints New Army Chief as General Upendra Dwivedi Retires

Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth has been appointed as the next Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), set to assume office on June 30, 2026. He will succeed General Upendra Dwivedi, who retires from service on the same day.

Seth, an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, has had a nearly four-decade-long career with extensive experience across various domains. His command assignments include an Armoured Regiment in the desert sector, an Armoured Brigade in the Western Theatre, and a Counter Insurgency Force in Jammu & Kashmir.

The next COAS has commanded the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, one of the army's premier strike formations, and served as General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area. He also commanded South Western Command and Southern Command, providing strategic oversight across critical theatres for over two and a half years.
