The Indian government has announced a new rule, effective April 10, where cash will no longer be accepted at toll booths. The move aims to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and minimize disputes. Commuters can now pay through FASTag or UPI, with the latter option incurring a 1.25 times fee.

Under the new rule, a car must have a FASTag, and failing that, the commuter can pay through UPI, but at a premium rate. The cash component has been completely phased out, and paying a double fee through cash is no longer an option.

In case FASTag and UPI both fail, an electronic notice (e-notice) will be issued to the vehicle owner, allowing for online payment. If payment is made within 72 hours, no additional fee will be levied. However, payment after 72 hours will incur a double toll fee, and non-payment after 15 days will result in 'appropriate restrictions'.
