The Election Commission has announced that exit polls cannot be held or disseminated from April 9 to April 29 for the upcoming assembly elections in five states.

This period is considered a 'silence period' where campaigning is strictly prohibited, except for door-to-door interactions by a limited number of party workers or candidates.

Conducting or broadcasting exit polls during this time is punishable under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, with a maximum imprisonment of two years or a fine, or both.

The assembly elections are scheduled to take place in Kerala, Assam, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal on different dates in April.
