Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed concern over the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has triggered a global energy crisis and disrupted trade routes, affecting India's economy and supply chains.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, PM Modi noted that the crisis has led to uncertainty in the supply of essential commodities such as petrol, diesel, gas, and fertilisers, and has already begun to impact commercial shipping lanes.

He described attempts by Iran to block maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz as 'unacceptable' and said India has engaged with all stakeholders to facilitate the movement of Indian vessels.

PM Modi reiterated that India supports a peaceful resolution and de-escalation, and highlighted the human dimension, saying the safety and livelihood of Indians living in Gulf countries remains a top priority for the government.

He also flagged concerns over Indian crew members stranded on ships in the Strait of Hormuz, calling it a 'serious issue' that is being closely monitored.

PM Modi warned that a prolonged conflict could have far-reaching consequences, and underlined India's push towards reducing excessive dependence on external sources in critical sectors.
