The Indian government has started reaching out to opposition parties to reach a consensus on delinking the women's quota from the census and delimitation process.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah met with leaders of several parties, including the Biju Janata Dal and the Shiv Sena, to discuss the proposed amendment.

If passed, the amendment would allow the reservation of seats for women to begin before the 2027 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Opposition parties have suggested delinking the reservation process from delimitation and census, and implementing the law from the 2029 Lok Sabha election.
