New Delhi: Over 2,800 child trafficking cases are pending trial in Indian courts, with Tamil Nadu accounting for the highest number of cases. The Supreme Court has expressed concern over the rising number of child trafficking cases, citing data from all high courts. The apex court had directed high courts to complete trials within six months, but many cases remain pending.
The Calcutta high court initially reported 1,317 child trafficking trials, but its second report showed a significant reduction in pendency. Other states with high pending cases include Assam, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh. The Supreme Court has asked all high courts to ensure speedy trials in these cases.
The court's remarks came after senior advocate Aparna Bhatt cited fresh incidents of child trafficking, highlighting the involvement of inter-state gangs in such crimes. The matter is posted for further hearing on April 8.
