The Election Commission of India has announced the election schedule for four states and a Union Territory, marking the beginning of a high-stakes battle for government control. The polls in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry are set to take place in April and May 2026.
In Assam, the 126-member legislative assembly will go to polls on April 9, 2026, with counting scheduled for May 4, 2026. Kerala's 140-seat assembly will also vote on April 9, 2026, with counting on May 4, 2026.
Tamil Nadu's 234-seat assembly will hold a single-phase election on April 23, 2026, with counting on May 4, 2026. Puducherry's 30-seat assembly will vote on April 9, 2026, with counting on the same day as the rest of the states.
West Bengal's 294-member assembly will hold two-phase elections, with 152 seats voting on April 23, 2026, and the remaining 142 seats voting on April 29, 2026. Counting will take place on May 4, 2026.
The Election Commission has ensured that the election processes for all five regions will be completed before May 6, 2026.
