India's first multi-lane free flow (MLFF) tolling system has been launched in Gujarat, marking a significant step towards digitizing the country's tolling ecosystem. The system, which uses ANPR cameras and AI-based technology, will reduce travel time, ease congestion, and minimize human intervention in toll operations.

Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari announced the launch, saying it will enhance 'Ease of Living' for citizens and strengthen 'Ease of Doing Business' by enabling faster and more efficient movement of goods and logistics.

The new system will be enforced through recent amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, which will deny services such as transfer of ownership and issuance of national permits to vehicles with unpaid toll dues.

The government has set a target to implement MLFF tolling across the national highway network by the end of 2026, effectively eliminating the need for vehicles to stop at toll plazas nationwide.
