The India Pavilion at the 61st International Art exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia (Venice Biennale) features the works of five Indian artists – Alwar Balasubramaniam, Ranjani Shettar, Sumakshi Singh, Skarma Sonam Tashi, and Asim Waqif – in a showcase of the country's diverse artistic talent.
The pavilion, curated by Amin Jaffer, is titled 'geographies of distance: remembering home' and explores the theme of home and identity through various mediums and materials.
Sumakshi Singh's installation, 'Permanent Address,' recreates her grandparents' demolished home in Delhi using embroidered panels, while Skarma Sonam Tashi's 'Echoes of Home' showcases traditional homes in Ladakh using locally-sourced materials.
Ranjani Shettar's 'Under the Same Sky' features suspended forms inspired by flowers and natural growth, and Alwar Balasubramaniam's 'Not Just For Us' is a 10 ft by 18 ft work made up of dried earth, clay, and resin.
Asim Waqif's 'Chaal' is a site-specific installation made of bamboo, evoking the scaffolding omnipresent in Indian cities.
The exhibition is a testament to the diversity and richness of Indian art and culture, and provides a unique platform for artists to showcase their work on a global stage.
