The Trinamool Congress-led Opposition has submitted a notice to impeach Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, citing seven specific charges including 'partisan and discriminatory conduct in office'.
At least 120 Lok Sabha MPs and 60 Rajya Sabha lawmakers have signed the notice, which will be tabled in both Houses of Parliament by Friday.
The Opposition parties have been at war with the Election Commission of India over the SIR exercise in poll-bound West Bengal, which they believe is aimed at disenfranchising their supporters.
The removal of the CEC or an EC is governed by Article 324 of the Constitution, which requires a two-thirds majority in both Houses of Parliament for their removal.
Even if the notice is served this week, it may take months for the debate to take place, by which time the elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry will be over.
