The Indian government has called an all-party meeting to brief lawmakers on the West Asia crisis, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statements in both Houses.

Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge has contested the decision, demanding a debate in the House instead of a briefing.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will chair the meeting, with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expected to appraise the situation to party leaders.

The meeting will be held inside the Parliament building at 5pm, according to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju's office.

Opposition parties, including the Trinamool Congress, have slammed the move, accusing the government of avoiding scrutiny.
