The Indian government has announced plans to use penalties imposed on polluters under various environmental laws to fund the new Environment Protection Fund.
The fund will be used for assessing and remediating environmental damages, as well as remediation of contaminated sites.
Up to 5% of the fund's annual amount may be used for administrative expenses, including staff salaries, office equipment, and professional services.
The government has also established a framework for categorizing causes of air pollution in Delhi-NCR and the country, based on source apportionment studies conducted across various cities.
The Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) has developed a Framework for Emission Inventory and Source Apportionment for Delhi-NCR, which outlines high-resolution emission mapping across major polluting sectors.
