Police in India have arrested a woman accused of forcing a member of a Scheduled Tribe community to work as a bonded labourer for nearly 30 years.
The victim, a 65-year-old man from the Koraga community, was allegedly made to work under exploitative conditions at a village in Kundapura taluk.
According to investigators, the man was initially employed as a domestic worker by Subbanna Shetty, but after his death, his daughter Rajani Shetty and her husband allegedly continued to compel him to work at their house.
The victim was assigned a range of tasks, including tending cattle, agricultural labour, and maintaining the household toilet, but was denied proper wages and basic facilities.
The case surfaced after a complaint was filed alleging prolonged exploitation of the tribal man, and a case has been registered at Kundapura Rural Police Station.
Rajani Shetty has been arrested and booked under provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
