A bomb-carrying drone boat struck a Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman, killing one Indian mariner on board, Oman said. The attack occurred off the coast of Muscat, the sultanate's capital, and was not immediately attributed to any party amid the US-Israel strikes on Iran and Tehran's retaliation.
The state-run Oman News Agency reported the attack, identifying the vessel as the MKD VYOM. The dead crew member was from India, news agency AP reported. The incident marked the first Indian casualty in the US-Iran conflict.
Reports of the attack surfaced on Sunday, with news agency Reuters earlier reporting a projectile hitting the tanker MKD VYOM, killing a crew member on board as the vessel sailed off the coast of Oman. The victim's nationality was not initially reported.
The vessel suffered an explosion and subsequent fire after being struck by a suspected projectile while off the coast of Muscat, Oman on 1 March, V.Ships Asia said in a statement. The crew member who died was in the engine room at the time of the incident.
