External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar has shared his unique perspective on work-life balance, saying that his role as a global affairs minister doesn't allow for traditional 'off days.' However, he emphasized that having a stable daily routine and incorporating personal interests can provide a sense of balance. Speaking at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, Jaishankar explained that his work schedule is often unpredictable, spanning multiple time zones and requiring him to be available 24/7. “My life is very mixed up; it doesn't operate on a single time zone, and there is no off switch and no on switch,” he noted. Despite the demands of his job, Jaishankar stressed that he prioritizes balance by building habits and practices into his daily routine. He enjoys listening to music, reading books, watching movies, and following sports, which he believes helps him remain grounded. Jaishankar also suggested that having a structured daily routine can provide balance, making it unnecessary to take deliberate breaks or go on digital detoxes. “If you build a physical routine into your cycle, give yourself some time to read, write, think, talk, watch, I can tell you your daily routine itself is so balanced that you don't need to unplug,” he said. In a lighter moment, Jaishankar joked that his wife might disagree with his views on balance, drawing laughter from the audience. While his approach to work-life balance may not be universally accepted, Jaishankar's emphasis on the importance of routine and personal interests is a valuable takeaway for those seeking to achieve a better balance in their own lives.
