Supreme Court judge Justice BV Nagarathna emphasized the significance of freedom of expression in a democracy, citing Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution. Speaking at the launch of a book by senior advocate Indira Jaising, Justice Nagarathna highlighted the importance of considering divergent thoughts and perspectives.
Justice Nagarathna praised Indira Jaising for consistently articulating alternative viewpoints, particularly on women's rights and the constitutional rights of marginalized sections. She described Jaising's new book as a memoir, feminist testimony, and constitutional reflection.
During an interaction, Jaising discussed the Supreme Court's recent ruling on the northeast Delhi riots case, calling it 'extraordinary' and a matter of celebration. She explained that the ruling was based on the grammar of the law, which requires the state to provide a fair trial within a decent amount of time.
