The Karnataka government has deferred a decision on implementing internal reservation within the Scheduled Caste quota. Law and parliamentary affairs minister HK Patil stated that the government remains committed to implementing internal reservation but requires further deliberation before making a final decision.
Patil emphasized that the government needs clarity on legal aspects before proceeding. The decision was postponed due to the inability to fully discuss the matter during the recent cabinet meeting.
Earlier in the day, home minister G Parameshwara mentioned that the government had already agreed in principle to provide internal reservation but concerns arose over its implementation. A decision to allocate 17% internal reservation within the Scheduled Caste category was previously made, but a demand has emerged for a separate 1% quota for nomadic communities known as Alemaris.
Ministers aligned with Dalit Right groups have opposed implementing internal reservation within the 15% quota for Scheduled Castes, while Dalit Left ministers have argued that the internal reservation formula should operate within the same quota.
The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party has urged the government to implement internal reservation while filling vacant posts, warning that protests could follow if recruitment proceeds without addressing the demand.
