Ten members of a family drowned and one is missing after a group of 14 people collecting freshwater shells was swept away by strong currents in Karnataka's Uttara Kannada district.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh to the next of kin of each victim and said search operations are underway for the missing person.

The incident occurred at the Palli Hallu Venkchapur river in Shirali village of Bhatkal taluk during heavy rainfall, with the river water level suddenly increasing and a strong gush of water sweeping them away.
