Karnataka Governor Thawarchand Gehlot's office has asked the state government to review its decision to replace marks for the third language in the SSLC exam with a grading system.
The move came after a representation from the Association for Preservation of Local Languages, Bengaluru, raised concerns over the academic and systemic consequences for Class 10 students.
The representation argued that third-language learning promotes linguistic diversity and intellectual development, and warned that removing marks may reduce student motivation and weaken engagement.
The government had announced the policy shift on March 27, citing a desire to ease academic pressure on students.
However, the change has sparked a broader debate over language policy in the state, with some seeing it as a step towards a two-language system.
Opposition leaders have criticized the policy, with Bharatiya Janata Party leaders vowing to restore the earlier system when they return to power.
