The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau in Kerala has launched a statewide operation to curb illegal soil mining, with raids conducted at 72 offices and multiple locations.
According to officials, the operation, titled 'Operation Earth Guard,' was initiated following intelligence inputs about widespread irregularities and corruption in the excavation and transportation of ordinary earth.
VACB teams conducted simultaneous inspections at district Mining and Geology offices, local self-government institutions, and sites where illegal earth removal had been reported.
Preliminary findings indicate alleged collusion involving officials from the Mining and Geology Department and local self-government institutions, who are suspected of issuing permits and transit passes in exchange for bribes.
The vigilance probe has also pointed to the role of middlemen and organised 'soil mafia' groups in facilitating and controlling illegal mining and transportation activities.
