The Kerala high court has directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to consider a petition against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader B Gopalakrishnan within two months.
Gopalakrishnan, the BJP state vice-president, had sparked controversy by alleging that the opposition fronts declined to field a Hindu candidate in Guruvayur assembly polls despite the constituency having a 48% Hindu population.
The high court declined to pass any observations on the matter, considering it would have a bearing on the polls scheduled on April 9.
Gopalakrishnan has stuck by his remarks, claiming they are not communal by nature. His nomination forms have been accepted by the Returning Officer.
