Abdul Rahim, a native of Kerala's Kozhikode, has finally returned home after spending twenty years in a Saudi jail. He was greeted by cheering crowds and a relieved family upon his arrival at the Karipur airport.
The former prisoner was released after a payment of ₹34 crore (15 million Saudi Riyals) in blood money, which was collectively amassed by the people of Kerala to save him from facing the gallows.
Rahim was initially imprisoned in 2006 for allegedly causing the accidental death of a specially-abled Saudi boy whom he was supposed to be taking care of.
He was sentenced to death in 2018, but his only chance of survival was to pay the massive blood money before the deadline of April 18, 2024.
Upon his arrival, Rahim was seen hugging his mother and thanking everyone who helped him, as the crowd cheered and gathered around their much-awaited reunion.
