A special court in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr has sentenced five men to life imprisonment for the brutal gang rape of a woman and her 14-year-old daughter during a robbery in 2016. The court found the convicts, Jubair, Mohd Sajid, Dharmveer, Naresh, and Sunil, guilty of multiple charges, including gang rape and robbery. In delivering the verdict, the judge highlighted the severe physical and mental trauma inflicted on the victims, stating that rape 'destroys the entire personality of the victim.' The court also emphasized the long-lasting impact of the crime on the victims and their family, who have been stigmatized in society. The case dates back to July 28, 2016, when a family of six was targeted by the convicts on National Highway 91. The convicts, alleged members of the Bawariya gang, stopped the family's car, took them hostage, and looted them before raping the woman and her daughter. The prosecution relied heavily on forensic evidence, including semen traces matching the convicts, to secure the convictions. The convicts, who have been in jail since their arrests, protested the verdict, claiming innocence. The case sparked nationwide outrage and led to a CBI probe, which resulted in the arrest of six people, including the five convicted on Saturday. The Allahabad high court later ordered action against 17 police officers for negligence in the initial investigation.
