Madhya Pradesh has initiated the process to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by the end of 2026, following the footsteps of BJP-ruled states Uttarakhand and Gujarat.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav directed state home department officials to pass the UCC law, urging ministers to provide suggestions and study challenges faced during implementation in other states.

A committee will be constituted to draft a UCC bill, with retired judge Ranjan Desai leading the panel.

Tribals will be exempted from the UCC ambit in Madhya Pradesh, similar to Uttarakhand and Gujarat.

The BJP's central leadership has emphasized the importance of implementing UCC, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterating the party's promise in poll-bound Assam.

UCC is a contentious issue, referring to a common set of laws for personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and succession for all.
