The Madras high court has issued notices to the Income Tax department and the union government over a petition alleging irregularities in Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin's assets and financial disclosures.

A comparison of Udhayanidhi's election affidavits from 2021 and 2026 revealed 'serious discrepancies', including previously declared assets that 'disappeared' from the affidavit this year.

The petitioner, R Kumaravel, also questioned the sharp rise in Udhayanidhi's income, which increased from ₹2.02 crore in the five years prior to 2020 to over ₹10.98 crore in subsequent years.

Kumaravel sought a direction from the court for a comprehensive inquiry and urged the court to call for a preliminary report before the State goes to polls on April 23 this year.
