Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat on Tuesday emphasized the need to make Indian society a 'gau bhakt' (one who holds cow in high esteem) to stop cow slaughter in the country.

Bhagwat said that while those in power have the intention to end cow slaughter, they need to raise awareness in society first, following which an effective ban on cow slaughter will come on its own.

He drew similarities between public sentiments on cow slaughter and the Ram Mandir issue, stating that the demand for a ban on cow slaughter will get the same support once it becomes the wish of the masses.

Bhagwat also highlighted the need to raise awareness about cow protection and cited the example of many people supporting 'gaushalas' (cow protection homes).

The RSS chief said that the organization has been making efforts for the ban on cow slaughter since 1952 and has forwarded a letter signed by 2 crore Indians to the President of India.

Bhagwat expressed confidence that the day is not far when the whole nation will respect the cow and that changes in society are necessary to achieve this goal.
