West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has fired back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his claim that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) blocked a bill for a 33% quota in Parliament and assemblies. Banerjee stressed that the women's reservation is not up for debate, as it has already been passed with cross-party support in 2023.
She underlined that her party, the TMC, has the highest proportion of female elected representatives in both Parliament and the state legislature, with 37.9% of Lok Sabha members being women.
Banerjee accused the Prime Minister of misleading the nation and not addressing it honestly, and said that the delimitation exercise is an assault on federal democracy.
She also dared the Prime Minister to address the nation from the Floor of Parliament, where he would be subject to scrutiny, challenge, and accountability.
Banerjee claimed that Modi could now feel power slipping through his fingers and was prepared to go to any extent to hold on for just a little while longer.
