Mamata Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo, has lost her stronghold in West Bengal to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2026 assembly elections.

The TMC chief, known as 'Didi' to her supporters, failed to hold on to power for a fourth consecutive term, marking a significant shift in the state's political landscape.

The BJP's victory is seen as a result of a combination of factors, including a change in strategy, effective booth-level management, and a focus on localised issues.

The TMC's defeat has been attributed to accumulated governance fatigue, allegations of corruption, weak law and order, and economic stagnation, which eroded the party's credibility among urban, middle-class, and business communities.

Mamata Banerjee's reliance on her personal appeal and the party's lack of organisational strength and ideological base have also been cited as reasons for the TMC's downfall.

As the BJP takes charge, Mamata Banerjee has promised to "bounce back" and has described the party's win as "immoral" and a result of "vote loot".
