In a strong statement, the Meghalaya unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has condemned attempts to disrupt Christmas celebrations across the country. The party's chief spokesperson, Mariahom Kharkrang, said such incidents go against India's civilizational values and the Constitution's guarantee of religious freedom. Christmas, a festival that celebrates love and unity, is an integral part of Indian culture, cherished by people from all communities, Kharkrang emphasized. He criticized the attempt to politicize isolated incidents of attacks on Christians in Assam, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh. The BJP leader said that it's only a handful of individuals trying to undermine the spirit of the festival, and condemned the "deplorable" acts. He added that attempts to disturb the festive atmosphere amount to an assault on the core values of Indian civilization. Rejecting opposition efforts to project the incidents as organized political actions, Kharkrang said that some parties are using isolated criminal acts for narrow political gains. He challenged rival parties to demonstrate similar inter-faith participation by their leadership, pointing out that the Prime Minister and senior BJP leaders have been participating in Christmas services for years. The BJP Meghalaya unit has assured that leaders and office-bearers are in touch with party units in states where the incidents occurred, to ensure that those responsible are held accountable. Kharkrang demanded that those involved in recent incidents be arrested, tried, and punished under the strictest provisions of law.
