A complaint has been filed with the National Commission for Women (NCW) against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his comments targeting the mother of an opposition candidate.
The complaint was filed by Sujata Gurung Chowdhury, whose 27-year-old daughter Kunki Chowdhury contested the recent assembly election as a candidate of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP).
Sarma had allegedly circulated an image of Sujata consuming beef, claiming it hurt the sentiments of Sanatani people, and supported anti-national individuals.
However, Kunki Chowdhury clarified that the image was taken at the International Church of Cannabis in Denver, USA, where she was posing with a pillow for a photo opportunity.
She attached a letter from the church's director, Steve Berke, confirming that the object she was holding was a pillow, not meat.
The opposition candidate's mother claimed that following Sarma's allegations, her personal photos, including those of her minor son, were circulated on social media without consent, leading to online abuse, harassment, and character assassination.
She urged the NCW to investigate the matter and remove defamatory content from social media platforms.
