In a significant move, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has directed the state government to dispose of toxic ash generated from the Union Carbide waste in Dhar district within the next two months. This decision comes after the state government sought a review of an earlier order that required the state to explore alternative sites for containment and engage international experts for the safe disposal of the toxic waste. The court has put its October 8 order on hold and instead instructed the state to follow a previous directive from December 3, 2024, which emphasized the need for timely scientific disposal of the toxic waste. A separate petition has raised concerns that the ash may contain radioactive materials, highlighting the need for specialized technology to safely destroy such waste, currently only available in Japan and Germany.
