The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has been granted the status of an Institution deemed to be University under a distinct category, enabling it to offer degree programmes independently.
This move aims to strengthen teacher education and educational research in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
NCERT will now be able to offer higher education programmes in education across various levels, including diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and specialised levels.
The institution will continue to play a core role in school curriculum development while exercising autonomy to design and run academic programmes.
The Centre has directed NCERT to commence research programmes, doctoral, and innovative academic programmes, and expand into new areas in line with NEP 2020.
The institution must adhere to UGC norms, compulsory accreditation, and participation in annual rankings under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
