Nirav Modi has moved the European Court of Human Rights in a desperate bid to avoid extradition to India, two weeks after a London court refused to reopen his case.

Modi, the fugitive diamantaire, has been in a UK prison since his arrest in 2019 over allegations of defrauding Punjab National Bank of ₹6,498 crore.

However, Indian agencies believe his application to the European Court of Human Rights is likely to be rejected at the admission stage.

The UK high court had dismissed Modi's plea to reopen the extradition, which was ordered in 2021, after considering assurances from the Indian government that he would not be interrogated by investigating agencies.

Modi had previously raised concerns about torture in Indian prisons and his mental health, but the London courts found no merit in his arguments.
