The Noida International Airport in Uttar Pradesh's Jewar was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday. The airport is set to become India's largest once fully built, with a capacity to handle 225 million passengers annually.
The airport will serve as the main international hub for cities including Noida, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Mathura, and Agra. It will also provide access to several religious and tourist spots.
With the aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the airport is expected to begin operations within 45 to 60 days from the inauguration date.
Civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu said that commercial operations will start within the next 45 days, while international flight services are likely to begin from September this year.
Domestic flights are expected to start first to major metro cities, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and others. However, the exact number of flights and destinations for the first phase are yet to be confirmed.
