Bhubaneswar, Odisha has received international recognition for its disaster management achievements, with BRICS countries acknowledging the state's efforts to minimize casualties during cyclones. Disaster Management Minister Suresp Pujari made the announcement after the conclusion of the three-day BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Group meeting in Puri.
The meeting, themed 'Building for resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability', brought together senior officials and technical experts from eight BRICS member countries to strengthen cooperation in disaster risk reduction. Odisha presented its best practices in early warning systems, cyclone preparedness, evacuation planning and community-based disaster management.
The event also provided an opportunity to highlight Odisha's rich cultural heritage and tourism potential. Hosting the international meeting allowed the state to showcase its globally recognised disaster management system and operational preparedness.
