Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has written to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, urging them to include 108 Socially and Economically Backward Classes (SEBC) communities from Odisha in the Central Other Backward Classes (OBC) list. This move aims to bridge the gap between state and central lists, ensuring uniform access to reservation benefits and welfare schemes for these communities. In Odisha, these communities are referred to as SEBC, whereas at the central level, they are known as OBC. However, only a select few have been included in the Central OBC list, leaving many without access to central government services, educational institutions, or employment opportunities. Pradhan, who hails from Odisha, pointed out that the exclusion of these communities has resulted in administrative complexities and challenges for their members, particularly when they migrate across states. The Union Minister emphasized that their inclusion in the Central OBC list is crucial for promoting social justice and inclusive development. To support his request, Pradhan attached a detailed list of 108 SEBC communities proposed for inclusion in the Central OBC list. He also urged the state government to reconstitute the Odisha State Commission for Backwards Classes, which has been without appointed members since January 3, 2024. By recognizing these communities at the central level, the government can ensure that they have equal access to benefits and opportunities, ultimately promoting their educational and economic advancement. The move is seen as a crucial step towards bridging the gap between state and central frameworks and promoting social justice in the country.
