The Trinamool Congress has moved an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in both Houses of Parliament, citing seven charges including 'partisan and discriminatory conduct in office' and 'deliberate obstruction of investigation of electoral fraud.'
At least 120 Lok Sabha MPs and 60 Rajya Sabha lawmakers have signed the motion, accusing Kumar of aiding the ruling BJP on several occasions, particularly in connection with the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The Opposition has raised concerns over the SIR exercise in West Bengal, with Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee accusing the Election Commission of deleting genuine voters.
The Chief Election Commissioner can be removed only through the same procedure and on the same grounds as a judge of the Supreme Court, as laid down under Article 324(5) of the Constitution.
