For years, Kerala witnessed a trend of alternating power between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF). However, in 2021, the LDF, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, broke this trend by winning 99 out of 140 seats.

Now, the LDF faces a similar challenge as the UDF, led by Congress, is its only key opponent. Meanwhile, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) hopes to make inroads into the state.

Vijayan, who is contesting from the Dharmadam Assembly constituency, has dropped the two-term limit for sitting legislators, which was introduced in 2021. This move has sparked controversy, with some reports suggesting that it may benefit Vijayan himself.

The Opposition Congress-led UDF has posed a big challenge to Vijayan by backing four CPI(M) candidates who have filed nominations as Independents, citing their displeasure with the party. This rebellion, coupled with the anti-incumbency trend in Kerala, could pose a big risk to the CPI(M).
