The phone call comes a day after the US sank an Iranian navy vessel off the coast of Sri Lanka, killing at least 84 sailors and bringing the conflict to India's doorstep.
The conflict in West Asia began after the US and Israel launched joint military strikes on Iran on February 28, killing Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The US, on March 4, torpedoed the Iranian ship off the coast of Sri Lanka, prompting Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi to condemn the attack and warn the US of setting a 'bitter' precedent.
