Modi stressed that 'violence has no place in a democracy and must be unequivocally condemned.'
The accused, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from California, is in custody and faces preliminary charges related to the use of a firearm and assaulting an officer with a dangerous weapon.
The FBI is leading the investigation into the shooting, which occurred at the White House correspondent's dinner venue.
