Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made six big promises to the people of West Bengal ahead of the Assembly elections in the state. In a speech in Purba Medinipur, he vowed to put corrupt leaders behind bars, implement the 7th Pay Commission, and reopen every rape case.

PM Modi also promised to grant Constitutional rights to refugees and drive out infiltrators. He said that a BJP government would restore faith in the rule of law and make the administrative machinery accountable to the public.

In a dig at the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool government, PM Modi said that a double-engine government of the BJP is needed so the Centre and the State could work together.

The 2026 election season officially began on Thursday, with voting for single-phase elections in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry. Assembly elections in West Bengal will take place in two phases, on April 23 and 29, with results announced on May 4.
