A post-mortem examination revealed that the stray dog that killed an 84-year-old bedridden woman in Kerala's Thrissur district was rabies-infected.
The elderly woman was killed and her 60-year-old son grievously injured in a stray dog attack at their home in Vellarakkad near Erumapetty on Thursday.
The dog was caught and beaten to death by locals later that night, and its carcass was examined by veterinarians, confirming the rabies infection.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death in connection with the incident and the woman's body was handed over to relatives after the post-mortem.
The incident highlights the threat of stray dogs in the area, with at least 500 dogs roaming the roads and over 100 people bitten in the last five years.
