Leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi is likely to visit Great Nicobar this weekend to discuss concerns of the Great Nicobarese tribal community over infrastructure projects. Gandhi will meet with the Tribal Council of Great Nicobar to discuss the diversion of tribal land and potential destruction of forests.
The Tribal Council had invited Gandhi to address their concerns, particularly regarding the transshipment project and the Great Nicobar Holistic development project. They are worried that at least 5-6 pre-Tsunami villages will be impacted, and they want to ensure that tribal land is not diverted.
Members of the Tribal Council had previously met with UT administration officials to discuss the issue, but they were asked to issue a 'surrender certificate' for some ancestral villages, which they are not keen to accept.
