The Rajasthan Legislative Assembly has passed a contentious bill aimed at regulating property transactions in notified disturbed areas and protecting tenants from eviction.
The Rajasthan Prohibition of Transfer of Immovable Property and Provision for Protection of Tenants from Eviction from Premises in Disturbed Areas Bill, 2026, has been criticized by the opposition as divisive and an attempt to fuel religious polarization.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Jogaram Patel defended the legislation, stating that it was brought to maintain social balance and harmony and was not based on any particular religion or community.
The bill empowers the state government to declare certain areas as "disturbed areas" if public order is affected due to riots or mob violence, and imposes strict punishment for violations, including imprisonment and fines.
Opposition leader Govind Singh Dotasra accused the government of trying to replicate the "Gujarat model" and restrict constitutional rights, warning that the bill could damage Rajasthan's tradition of communal harmony.
