Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has emphasized the need for a society devoted to cows to stop cow slaughter. He compared the fervour for the Ram Temple to the required 'feeling' for cows, stating that once the masses wish for it, it will happen on its own.
Bhagwat referred to the landmark Supreme Court judgment in 2019 that paved the way for the construction of the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya, saying that the decision was made when the 'jan-bhavna' (wish of the masses) became strong.
He called for a national ban on cow slaughter, stating that those in power wish to do so but need to discuss and raise the issue among the masses. The RSS has been making efforts for the ban since 1952 and has forwarded a letter signed by two crore Indians to the President of India.
Most states have imposed restrictions or prohibitions on cow slaughter, and the Allahabad High Court has suggested that the Centre declare the cow a 'protected national animal'.
