The Supreme Court has urged the Centre to introduce a law recognising paternity leave as a social security benefit, stating that parenthood is not a solitary function and both parents play a significant role in a child's development.
The apex court observed that while the mother is central to a child's emotional, physical, and psychological development, the father's role is equally important and should not be overlooked.
The court noted that the early months and years of a child's life are a formative period, and the presence of a father contributes significantly to the child's emotional and psychological well-being.
The bench urged the Union to come up with a provision recognising paternity leave as a social security benefit, with a duration determined in a manner responsive to the needs of both the parent and the child.
